Michael Simmons, a civil rights veteran, holds a free online discussion in English about the racial justice movement organized by FLEX Hungary on Zoom at 4.30 pm on the 23rd of February.
To honor black history month, FLEX Hungary is inviting you to a discussion, with Michael Simmons, an international human rights activist. The event is called Racial Justice Then and Now. Michael will talk about his personal experience, the most significant issues for the racial justice movement today, and discuss what Hungarian youth can learn from it.
The attendance is free, but you have to register in advance for this meeting here. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.
About Michael Simmons
Michael Simmons has been an international human rights and peace activist for over 40 years. He began as an organizer for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee during the 60s in the United States. Over his career, Michael has taken his work to Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. He has organized conferences and seminars in Europe and Africa on the impact of East-West Tension on the Third World; seminars on peace and reconciliation in Bosnia, Macedonia, and Kosovo during and after the Balkan Wars; a regional conference on sex trafficking in the Balkans; and has done extensive work with Roma in Central Europe on Roma human rights issues.
About Black History Month
Black History Month is an annual observance originating in the United States, where it is also known as African American History Month. It has received official recognition from governments in the United States and Canada and recently has been commemorated in Ireland, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. It began as a way of remembering important people and events in the history of the African diaspora. It is celebrated in February in the United States and Canada, while in Ireland, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom, it is observed in October.
About FLEX Hungary
FLEX Hungary is a full scholarship provided by the government of the United States for high school students. The Future Leaders Exchange (FLEX) Program provides scholarships for secondary school students from Europe and Eurasia to travel to the United States, live with a US host family, and attend a US high school for a full academic year. The FLEX Program is sponsored by the US Department of State. American Council Hungary’s largest source of activity is the FLEX program, which will provide 14 merit-based scholarships in the upcoming program years. FLEX is fully funded by the US Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
