The Oscar winner Tim Robbins (The Shawshank Redemption) and his troupe, The Actors’ Gang, will arrive at the Csokonai Theatre for two evenings on the 18th and the 19th of September.
Culver City, CA, June 18, 2024 – The Actors’ Gang presents the world premiere of Topsy Turvy (A Musical Greek Vaudeville), written and directed by Artistic Director Tim Robbins. After completing a sold-out, five-week run in Los Angeles, Topsy Turvy premiered internationally at the Sibiu International Theatre Festival in Sibiu, Romania, launching this summer’s 31st festival on the 21st and the 22nd of June, and has been invited to perform at the Malta Festival Poznań in Poland this September.
Set in a humorous and comedic hybrid world of classical Greek theater and a raucous vaudeville show, in Topsy Turvy, the unity of a Greek Chorus of mortals is shattered by a mysterious illness. The Chorus desperately invokes the Gods, seeking divine intervention to help mend their divisiveness and restore their ability to sing together.
There are visits from a Las Vegas-inspired Bacchus and Cupid, the Aztec goddess Coatlique, the biblical character Onan, and Dionysus and Aphrodite. Mixed in with the Gods are magicians, hypnotists, an acrobatic monkey, and the master of ceremonies, the Great Distracto. Music plays a key role in Topsy Turvy with six original songs written by Robbins, brought to life by a small orchestra of musicians and the choral harmonies of 17 actors.
The result, Topsy Turvy, is among the earliest stage works in response to the distress of the last four years. Everyone, Gods and mortals alike, gets to have their say before the evening is over.

The performance will be played in the original English language with Hungarian subtitles, and the conversation will be assisted by an interpreter.
