Step out of the lecture hall and into the Agora Science Centre for Science Stories and Conversations.
The Agora Science Centre launched a series of scientific events in English. This English-language program is designed mainly for university students and adults, offering insights into intriguing episodes from the history of science.
Each session ends with an informal discussion, giving you the chance to share thoughts, ask questions, and connect with fellow students and researchers. The goal is to build a small community by June, whose members may even help shape the topics for a possible autumn series.
These sessions are specifically intended for adults and university students. If you wish to participate on any date, register for the program by clicking here.
Participation Fee: 1200 HUF/event
Where: Agora Science Centre, Egyetem tér 1. (Entrance: Behind the DEAC sports courts)
Dates and themes:
29th of April, 5 pm: Great astronomical discoveries
Does the Sun revolve around the Earth, or vice versa? Do crystal spheres supporting planets really exist? Can two comets be one and the same? Are there planets beyond Neptune? This educational lecture presents ten grandiose discoveries made by ten astronomers, from ancient times to the present day.
13th of May, 5 pm: The Earliest Mathematics
How did prehistoric humans count? Did they even know numbers? What do we know about the arithmetic and geometric knowledge of ancient civilizations? This lecture will explore the history of mathematics from the beginnings of human history, captivated by the world of numbers, from Hellas to Mesopotamia, and from India to Egypt.
27th of May, 5 pm: Planets behind the numbers
A planet cannot only be discovered with a telescope. The life of the French mathematician Urbain Le Verrier demonstrates that we can discover a planet in the sky using only mathematics. This educational lecture will teach about the discovery of Neptune.
10th of June, 5 pm: History of vehicles
What was the first vehicle? When did humans begin to explore the seas, and when did they conquer the air? The history of vehicles is as old as human civilization itself. In this lecture, participants can take an imaginary journey from ancient Mesopotamia to the present day, traveling through time and space — on land, water, and in the air — while also expanding their knowledge of physics and mechanics.
24th of June, 5 pm: The feats of space exploration
We have travelled to space, landed on the Moon, and even on a comet. We have deflected an asteroid and photographed Earth from further away than ever before. This astronomy lecture will review the greatest achievements in the exploration of outer space, from the creation of the most advanced space telescope to the ultimate destinations of space probes.
