The History of the University of Debrecen dates to 1538 when the Reformed College of Debrecen was established. This was the first campus medical school in Central Europe. In 1932, the university’s main building was completed, making it one of the largest buildings in the fourth biggest city in the country. On the 1st of January 2000, the colleges and universities of Hajdú-Bihar county were combined. The resulting University of Debrecen had five university- and three college-level faculties with 20,000 students. This university is one of the largest institutions of higher education in Hungary today. The cooperation of 15 faculties ensures the multidisciplinary background guaranteeing the University a leading role as a research and education institution and the intellectual center of Eastern Hungary.
The international programs were launched in 1986, and all of them are delivered in English. Now the number of international students is over 5,600, and they represent countries from all major regions of the world, including Europe, the Middle, and the Far East, Africa, and North America. Strategic partnership with plenty of local and multinational enterprises in the field of research, innovation, and production helps to get practical experience and job.
