The Popular Music Institute of the University of Debrecen (UD) closed the semester with a gala concert in the Liszt Hall of the Faculty of Music. In the traditional end-of-semester performance, the students showed what they had learned and how much they had improved in the past months with high-quality productions.
At the end of each semester, students of UD who are interested in popular music and learning to sing in addition to various instruments and who come from different courses of UD finish the course with a gala concert.
In the current course, 24 university students and external participants practiced week after week so that on Sunday evening, they would all step on stage and show off their skills in the Liszt Hall of the Faculty of Music.
In his speech before the concert, Kálmán Kapusi, the head of the UD Popular Music Institute, evaluated the past semester and emphasized that there is a great need for light music education in Debrecen as at the university, which is of exemplary importance throughout the country.
Popular music education is significant to UD, and the course also reinforces this approach. Many international students participate in this course, thanks to which a real multicultural community is formed each semester, so the participants can get to know each other’s traditions. The goal is for them to enjoy what they do and to add color to the university’s educational palette through their work
said the head of the institute.

The most talented students of Rocksuli in Debrecen also performed at the gala, and they complemented the musical pieces with the instrumental playing that was missing in the given semester. Kálmán Kapusi noted that they plan to strengthen the cooperation with Rocksuli even more.
The closing of the gala concert was a real community experience, twenty-four young people, Hungarians, and internationals, took to the stage to sing together the LGT classic Neked írom a dalt song.
More and more people apply for the highly successful course every year. In view of the strong interest, the initiative will continue next year, and the popular music education at the university level will be further strengthened by the nationally unique contemporary popular music BA course starting in September.
