The short summary of the European Universities Games 2024 from the 17th to the 24th of July.
In the overall medal table, the University of Zagreb finished at the top with thirteen gold medals, with the University of Physical Education in Budapest and Gazi University from Turkey also making it to the podium. However, broken down by nations, Hungary won the most medals, with a total of 58.
In basketball, the men’s title was claimed by Vytautas Magnus University from Lithuania, while the women’s title went to the University of Bologna from Italy, both securing confident victories in the finals.
The handball cup finals resulted in Romanian triumphs, with Suecava University winning in the women’s category and Ovidius University in the men’s.
In beach handball, not only did teams from the same country win, but both titles were claimed by the same institution, with the University of Malaga from Spain winning in both the men’s and women’s categories.
The men’s water polo final was intense and thrilling as expected, and after the match, the water polo team from the University of Split in Croatia stood atop the podium.
The men’s doubles tennis championship was won by the University of Zurich from Austria, and the women’s doubles by the University of Cologne from Germany.
In doubles table tennis, the women’s title went to AUS Akademik from Bulgaria, and the men’s team event was won by Nisantasi University from Turkey, which also took the overall team trophy.
In men’s singles, Jakub Flowarski from Zamojski Academy in Poland dominated the field, while Ines Matos from the University of Porto in Portugal celebrated in the women’s category.
Para table tennis players competed in two groups; in the 6-8 category, Edgar Empis from Institute Les Tourelles Rouen in France took the gold, while in the 9-10 category, Maximillian Flint from Loughborough University in England received the top medal.
In badminton, the women’s singles event was won by Ágnes Kőrösi from the University of Physical Education in Budapest, and the men’s singles by Valentin Singer from the University of Bordeaux. In women’s doubles, Ulyana Volskaya and Anastasya Khomich from the University of Gdańsk were the happiest – Khomich also won the mixed doubles title with Adrian Krawczyk. The men’s doubles event was won by Thomas Baures and Aymeric Torres from the University of Strasbourg.
The men’s and women’s beach volleyball championships concluded. In the women’s category, the Lithuanian Sports University triumphed over their Czech rivals, while in the men’s category, the University of Vienna from Austria emerged victorious.
In taekwondo, Azizjan Tajdibaev from Paris Nanterre University, Matej Nikolic from the University of Zagreb, Kelen Bailey from the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, Lukasz Nowak from the University of Warsaw, and Kaize Zhou from Karlsruhe University won in their respective men’s Kyrougi weight classes. In the women’s Kyrougi, the champions were Rebeka Füredi from the Hungarian University of Agricultural Sciences, Esmeralda Husovic from the University of Munich, Demir Kardelen from Ondokuz University, Lauren Watson from the University of Salford, and Ivana Avelic from the University of Zagreb.
The men’s table tennis final in Debrecen was won relatively easily by the overwhelming favorite, Turkey’s Nisantasi University, whereas in the women’s category, the University of Zagreb from Croatia had to fight a marathon battle to secure victory over their Bulgarian rivals.
Regarding taekwondo, in the women’s Kyorugi category, Mihaela Bajan representing Romania’s Spiru Haret University, Alma Maria Parrado from the University of Barcelona, Patakfalvy Luca competing for Budapest’s Corvinus University, and Andrea Komatina from Montenegro’s Donja Gorica University reached the top. In the men’s Kyorugi category, Enzo Comprelle from the University of Paris-Saclay, Matija Crep from the University of Zagreb, and Mehmet Kani Polat from Sabanci University emerged victorious.
In the mixed team badminton championship, the gold medal match featured the University of Strasbourg from France and the University of Gdansk from Poland. The match lacked drama as Strasbourg delivered an undeniable performance, winning 3-0 and claiming the 2024 EUG throne.
A significant achievement was also made by Reihaneh Omranimoghadam from Germany’s Mittweida University, who clinched the ultimate victory in the women’s Poomsae category. In the same category for men, Muhammed Emir Yilmaz from Turkey’s Gazi University celebrated the championship title.
In the Kata category, the women’s gold medalist was Natacha Fernandes from the University of Lisbon, Portugal, while the men’s gold went to Petru Comanescu from the University of Bucharest, Romania. In the women’s team event of the same category, the University of Porto, Portugal, celebrated victory, while in the men’s team event, Istanbul Aydin University took home the trophy.
The Turkish delegation also won the men’s Kumite category, while the women’s Kumite matches concluded with a victory for the University of Pristina, Kosovo.
In women’s football, the University of Wurzburg defeated the French University of Hauts-de-France in a penalty shootout early in the afternoon. The crowd then moved to the DEAC Sports Center, where the host team from the University of Debrecen secured the bronze medal in a penalty shootout, delighting their supporters.
After the women’s victory, the University of Wurzburg aimed for the trophy in the men’s competition, but the Ukrainian State University of Trade and Economics thwarted their plans with a win in double extra time.
The third-place match in men’s futsal was won more easily than expected but deservedly by the University of Zagreb. The gold medal match featured the two highest-performing teams of the past week: the Ukrainian University of Ivano-Frankivsk and the Spanish University of Seville. The teams couldn’t be separated, leading to another penalty shootout, where fortune favored the Spanish side.
