For the Catholic Church, the 1st of November, All Saints’ Day, is the memorial day for all blissful souls, while Protestantism commemorates the goners at this time.
All Saints’ Day is a Christian holiday, a memorial day for blissful souls, which the Catholic Christian world celebrates on the 1st of November. It is a public holiday in Hungary.
People light candles and tealights because their light symbolizes eternal light.
Some people assume that the custom of lighting candles has a pre-Christian origin. They believe that they light flames on the graves so that the wandering souls can warm themselves with the fire of the candles, so that they can find their way back to their graves and not disturb the living.
In Hungary, the decoration of graves with flowers and wreaths spread from the beginning of the 19th century due to German Catholic influence. This custom was adopted not only by Catholics but also by Protestants and non-believers. Since the white and colored versions of the chrysanthemum bloom around All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day, this flower is mostly used to decorate graves in Hungary.
William Walsham How’s hymn „For All the Saints” is traditionally sung in English-speaking countries.
