Annual summary of the international QS, THE and RUR lists focusing on the University of Debrecen (UD).
Quacquarelli Symonds
1,500 of the 2,963 higher education institutions in 104 countries were included in the QS World University Rankings 2024 published by QS. UD is ranked 671-680, i.e. it is in the first quarter of the examined field, and maintains its second place among Hungarian universities. As in previous years, the UD was the best in terms of the ratio of foreign students.
According to the list, the best universities are Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford.
Times Higher Education
In the Times Higher Education (THE) latest Impact Rankings 2023, the social and economic role, and effects of 1,591 higher education institutions in 112 countries were assessed against the UN Sustainable Development Goals in 17 categories. The renowned British ranking tier list assessed the UD in 6 categories, overall, UD was ranked among the 301-400 as the best Hungarian university.
UD is the best Hungarian university in the Partnership for Goals category, where it moved up to 99th position from 201-300 last year. In this category, educational, research and social engagement activities related to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals were assessed.
The institution further improved its rating in the Decent Work and Economic Growth category, which examines universities’ economic research and access to practical training and internships, where UD ranked 101-200.
UD also finished 201-300 in the Life under water categories. Here, research related to the topic, educational and scientific activities related to aquatic ecosystems, the disposal of water-hazardous waste, and the maintenance of local aquatic ecosystems were assessed.
In the Good Health and Wellbeing category, the number and ratio of students participating in health education in relation to the total number of students of the UD, health-related research, collaboration with industries, and the infrastructure related to a healthy lifestyle were assessed while in the Sustainable Cities and Communities category the university’s sustainability-related research and its efforts to preserve cultural heritage and make it available to local communities also played a role. In both categories the University of Debrecen finished in 301-400 places.
The overall list of THE 2023 is led by the Western Sydney University (Australia), the University of Manchester (UK) is second and Queen’s University (Canada) is in third place.
Round University Ranking
The University of Debrecen took the 89th place in the thematic ranking issued by Round University Ranking (for natural sciences). With this result, UD, the only Hungarian institution of higher education in the diamond league, was ranked in the top 100 in the 2022 rankings of RUR.
At the top of the science rankings, there are three institutions from the United States of America: California Institute of Technology (Caltech), Princeton University, and Stanford University.
The list of the first hundred, the so-called diamond league, also contains the University of Debrecen as the only Hungarian institution.
UD proved to be successful in all the RUR specialization rankings:

- Social (385)
- Life Sciences (405)
- Technical (624).
UD is also in the top 500 in the full list, currently ranked 450th.
