Interdisciplinary Science Rankings 2026
The University of Debrecen has made it to the thematic ranking of institutions by interdisciplinary science compiled by Times Higher Education, occupying a place in the 401-500 category. The Interdisciplinary Science Ranking ranks a total of 911 institutions from 94 countries or territories.
Interdisciplinary Science Ranking (ISR), created by the renowned British magazine Times Higher Education in association with Schmidt Science Fellows, measures the contributions and commitment to interdisciplinary scientific research by colleges and universities.
Ranked number one at the top of the list is a strategic partner of the University of Debrecen: Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). It is followed by Stanford University and California Institute of Technology, all of which are in the United States.

QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2026
The University of Debrecen continues to maintain its leading position among Hungarian institutions of higher education in the QS sustainability rankings. It was ranked 322nd in the Sustainability 2026 world rankings published by the British ranking agency Quacquarelli Symonds, which makes it the best Hungarian institution.
In the QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2026 list, QS ranked 2,001 institutions of higher education from 108 countries
Of the three criteria examined, UD achieved the best results in university governance, ranking 226th. Compared to last year’s figures, the university moved up significantly in the social impact category, advancing more than 40 places.

Global Ranking of Academic Subjects
In the Shanghai Ranking Subject list, UD was ranked in the 301-400 category in the field of ecology, again finishing as the best Hungarian university.
Shanghai Ranking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) ranks universities in 55 subjects across five fields of study: natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences and social sciences. The GRAS list includes a total of 1,900 institutions from 96 countries, out of the more than 5,000 universities worldwide that have provided data.
In the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2025, the University of Debrecen achieved its best result in the field of ecology, ranking 301-400, which turned out to indicate the best performance among Hungarian universities. In mathematics, it also ranked 301-400, while in agricultural sciences and pharmaceutical sciences, it ranked 401-500.

World University Rankings 2026
The University of Debrecen continues to remain among the top 1000 institutions of higher education in the Times Higher Education (THE) ranking. The global ranking as THE World University Rankings 2026 covered nearly 2200 institutions of higher education from as many as 115 countries selected from a total of 28000 universities in the world.
Based on its teaching and research activities, international outlook, industrial income and patents, the renowned British ranking agency Times Higher Education ranked the University of Debrecen in the 801-1000 category again. The institution performed best in the teaching category, ranking 287th in this field.
At the top of the World University Rankings 2026 list, we find the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom, followed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), a strategic partner of the University of Debrecen, with Princeton University and the University of Cambridge sharing the third place together.
