In the What to watch article series, I analyze the video services available in Hungary and try to find out who is worth using them.
Netflix is an American over-the-top content platform and production company headquartered in Los Gatos, California. It was founded in 1997 by Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph. The Hungarian version of the site was launched on the 4th of October 2019. Netflix’s initial business model included DVD sales and rental by mail, but they abandoned the sales about a year after the company’s founding.
Netflix is a streaming service that offers a wide variety of award-winning series, movies, animations, documentaries and more.
+ ADVANTAGES
- There is a 1-month trial period. If we cancel the service during this time, we will not have to pay for it.
- Only those who live with you can use your account. An algorithm has already been developed to check this. It can be used simultaneously on 4 different devices with the Premium subscription, on 2 devices with the Standard subscription, and on 1 device with the Basic subscription.
- There is a parental control, this is a separated profile where you can set it to show only programs for all audiences or under 12.
- Netflix has original content that can only be accessed legally here (e.g. Dark Mirror, Money Heist).
- You do not need a continuous broadband Internet connection to use it, because you can download the content through the Netflix application, where you can then view them even if you do not have an Internet connection.
- Seasons are uploaded all at once, so you don’t have to wait for the new episodes every week like similar services.
- Full HD (1080p), Ultra HD (4K) and HDR quality are available depending on Internet service and device capabilities. Not all content is available in HD, Full HD, Ultra HD or HDR quality.
- You can use Netflix gift cards to pay for Netflix or to give as a gift. Netflix gift cards can be purchased at various retail locations and online. Gift cards do not expire, which is printed on the back of each card. Gift cards are non-refundable. Once a Netflix gift card is applied to an account, you can watch Netflix until the gift card balance runs out. Gift cards cannot be reloaded.
- Everything has English dub or subtitles.
– DISADVANTAGES
- The price is high, even the cheapest monthly fee is 2490 Forints, and the price will be automatically deducted from the account until you don’t cancel it.

FUNCTIONS
Skip intro and credits (recap for series). You can ask for a reminder of the premieres. You can like or dislike shows. You can filter the results by genre in the TV shows and movies menu/category. You can search among movies (e.g. by writer, genre, keyword, title, actors, director). In some menus/categories, you can sort the results by recommendation, year of publication or alphabet. You can also change the dubbing and subtitle while watching, the size of the latter can also be changed. You can backward and forward 10 seconds in playback. You can add shows to your own list (making them more accessible, useful for series). You can resume the show from where we left off earlier. You can also set the playback speed.
IS IT WORTH IT?
It is the only 4K streaming service in Hungary so far (Disney+ and HBO Max will change this in the second half of the year), so if you watch programs in 4K quality on the proper device, and have a strong enough internet, you have no other legal choice. You can try it for free for a month before deciding.
