Communication is an important life skill. Without it, the world will be in great chaos and perhaps, development is nowhere possible. In socialization, we use conversational skills, an interactive form of communication, to share our thoughts and in turn, listen to what others are saying.
Conversations matter because being able to express ourselves can help us deal with our emotions better.
Society’s expectations often make it difficult for us to show our emotions. For example, we often associate crying as a sign of weakness. But the truth is, it is human to cry. Crying is one way of expressing sadness or grief. When we suppress our emotions, it can lead to mental exhaustion which is never usually healthy.
Conversations matter because we have to remind ourselves we are not alone in our battles in life.
We all miss the pre-pandemic life. Parties, face-to-face classes, traveling to different countries are a few of the activities that we can’t do now. Research studies show that there is a connection between the importance of having strong social connections as a vital component of our health. Luckily, because of technology, we can easily communicate with our loved ones and even make friends on the Internet. Even if the conversation is about bad experiences during the pandemic, it is comforting to know that there are people who can relate to our struggles.

Conversations matter because it allows us to have a fresh and different perspective in life.
Because we have different cultural backgrounds and childhood experiences, we have a unique perspective in life. Having different perspectives is one of the reasons why we should be able to communicate effectively. It can be a challenge especially for students who are not accustomed to the culture here. However, it can also be an opportunity to learn from other people and try to see if it will work for you. Seeing the world in a different way begins with a conversation.
Despite the various factors that affect the way we think and communicate, we can all agree that having a conversation is important especially during this time when we are required to follow physical distancing protocols yet keep our sanity. .
The Mental Health Committee International Student Union (MHC-ISU) of the University of Debrecen is hosting an online Conversation Club on March 16 at 7 PM. With the vision to create a supportive community, the Conversation Club becomes a platform for students where they have the freedom to express their feelings without prejudice, talk about the good and bad experiences and share some tips and advice.
