People around the world celebrate Advent, the period each December where Christians prepare for Christmas. It begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas, on the 28th of November this year.
The lighting of an advent wreath candle is a common way to countdown to Christmas. The candles represent the four Sundays of Advent, and one candle is lit each Sunday in Advent.
The 28th of November:
At 4:30 pm in the Memorial Garden, you can watch a gift program performed by Lóránd Heit and his folk band, followed by festive speeches and the lighting of the first Advent candle at 5 pm. After lighting the candle, people walk together from the Memorial Garden in front of the Reformed Big Church, where the lights of the city come to light at 5:30 pm with musical background. You must have a vaccination certificate to enter the Memorial Garden.
There will be a traffic restriction between the Town Hall (Városháza) and Kálvin Square (Kálvin tér) during the candlelight ceremony from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm. Tram number 1 and tram number 2 will not go between the Town Hall (Városháza), and Kálvin Square (Kálvin tér) stops. Tickets can be used after the transfer, but they must be validated on both vehicles.

From the 28th of November (the first Sunday of Advent) until the 6th of January (epiphany), there will be two advent trams with festive decorative lights.
There is power saving LED illumination, and a skating rink with 750 square meters of continuous ice surface on Kossuth square (Kossuth tér).
The Jégkarc Egyesület will present a special program to the audience on the skating rink at 6 pm. (in case of the weather permits it)
The skating rink in the northern event space of the Nagyerdei Stadion is operating in the usual way as in previous years.
The Lighthouse group of Debrecen will gladden us with an extraordinary visual experience in Kossuth Square this year.
From the 3rd of December:
On the 3rd of December, kindergartens of Debrecen will decorate a total of 24 small Christmas trees in Dósa nádor Square, which were adopted by 1-1 kindergartens, and they will make decorations for the trees.

In Adventi Kuckó, located in the shop a few steps from the corner of Bajcsy Zsilinszky Street and Piac Street (in the building of Aranybika), between the 3rd and 6th of December, the Santa Claus of Debrecen is waiting for the children, who can take a picture with him.
What’s more, the Debrecen Charitable Body will also host a fundraiser campaign “Add tovább!” from the 7th to the 23rd of December in Adventi Kuckó. Donations can be placed in a collection box in front of the building without entry.

There will be a CSAK design fair from 10 am to 7 pm on the 4th, 11th, and 18th of December, and a craft fair on the 5th, 12th, and 19th of December.
The Valcer Dance Studio Debrecen will perform its show entitled “Karácsonyi Valceremónia” at 7 pm on the 18th of December in the Great Hall of the Kölcsey Center. You can only enter with a mask and a vaccination certificate. Tickets will be available soon.
