The highlight of the farsang is the carnival, traditionally called the “tail of the farsang” in Hungary. These are the last three days from Carnival Sunday to Shrove Tuesday, which is also a farewell to winter amidst great fun. In many cities, the famous carnival (Rio carnival, Venice carnival) is held, and in Hungary, the most famous event of the farsang, the busójárás of Mohács.
In Hungary, the farsang was the period of choosing a spouse and a significant “wedding season” since it was forbidden to hold a wedding during the Easter fasting period. In the villages, young men organized the balls. Through the mediation of their relatives, the girls gave the selected young man a posy, who pinned it on his hat as a public display at the end of the farsang. The essence of the prom season and dance party was the engagement.
Shrove Tuesday is the last day of the farsang. A moving church holiday, it always precedes Easter by 47 days. It is the date of the farsang funeral. A straw man or a coffin was usually burned on this day, symbolically closing the farsang and winter.
Shrove Tuesday is followed by Ash Wednesday, which is the beginning of the 40-day Lent. According to today’s Hungarian practice, the day after this is Gluttonous Thursday, but this was mistakenly revived on this day because its real-time is a week earlier. Christians do not eat meat and end the festivities. They fast for 40 days until Easter Sunday.
