Starting in September, more than 7,300 people will study in the largest student community in East-Central Europe at the English-language courses of the University of Debrecen (UD). The university starts a postdoctoral scholarship for research support from the money received from international students.
The Coordinating Center for International Education of UD registered the applications of more than 26,800 internationals in the admission procedure for the 2023/2024 academic year for the announced 104 English-language programs. It is expected that 1,900 new students will start their studies in UD’s courses in English in the following semester.
Many foreign students come to the University of Debrecen in the Stipendium Hungaricum program. UD is the most popular institute in the scholarship system. This year, compared to last year’s record number of applications, 6% more people, more than 23,200, submitted their applications. It is about 40% of the applications in Hungary. Based on the decision of the Tempus Public Foundation’s Board of Trustees, 833 students can start their studies at the university with funds provided by the state
told Attila Jenei hirek.unideb.hu.
The director of the UD Coordinating Center for International Education called it welcome that more and more Ph.D. students are among the participants of the Stipendium Hungaricum program. In the academic year 2023/2024, 161 new international doctoral students will start their scientific activities at UD. They will join the work of the doctoral schools, thereby supporting the university’s scientific research.
Contrary to the national trend, the number of Ph.D. students at the University of Debrecen is increasing. That is why we are launching a postdoctoral scholarship program to support science. We would like to allocate HUF 250 million from the funds received from foreign students’ training programs to projects supported but not won by the OTKA (Országos Tudományos Kutatási Alapprogramok, in English: National Basic Programs for Scientific Research) and to the support of Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship holders
Attila Jenei added.
In the international study market, UD’s most popular faculties are the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Engineering, the Faculty of Informatics, the Faculty of Science and Technology, the Faculty of Economics and Business, and the Faculty of Health Sciences. 53% of the students study in the university’s non-health courses, and 47% in medical courses. The institution offers training opportunities for more than 100 majors, 80% aimed at non-health fields.
UD’s international student community continues to grow thanks to the successful marketing activity. However, in the future, several factors must be considered to prevent successful recruitment. In addition to maximizing the number of scholarship students, housing can be one of the defining limits to the increase in the number of students
Attila Jenei added.
UD currently has about 30,000 students. International students make up about 25% of active full-time students.
